2009-10 TIGER CHEERLEADING & MASCOT TRYOUT INFORMATION

APRIL 17-19, 2009

TRYOUT CLINIC – FRIDAY, APRIL 17

TRYOUT INTERVIEWS – SATURDAY, APRIL 18

TRYOUTS – SUNDAY, APRIL 19

MISCELLANEOUS CHEER TRYOUT INFORMATION

Please wear purple and white to both skill tryouts and interviews.  Girls please wear a fitted white tank top with purple shorts.  Guys please wear blank white t-shirt along with purple shorts.  It is important to practice your material in the clothes you are actually going to tryout in.  If you wear biker shorts underneath cheer shorts – they should not be longer than the hem of your shorts.  Jewelry must be at a minimum and is discouraged for safety purposes.  We DO NOT wear ponytails for performance – the only time a ponytail is OK is at practices.  Please plan your hair accordingly.  Uniform hair is half-up/half-down with a purple, gold, or white scrunchie.  It is OK to have the top portion of your hair back in a small ponytail, but not all of it.  Any tennis shoes you have are fine – but please have them clean.

All score sheets, score sheet description and miscellaneous information will be posted at each practice session.  Please take time to review this material and ask questions or clarifications of any points you don’t understand.

Tryouts will consist of a personal interview and a skills demonstration.  A panel of five judges will be selected for interview and skills tryouts.  The interview judges are asked to evaluate the applicant’s poise, appearance, interpersonal skills, and communication skills.  The scores from the high and low judges are dropped and a total of the scores from the middle three judges will be used for the selection of squad members.

Please call Brian Bridges at 501-617-1061 or e-mail brianjbridges@gmail.com if you have any questions.  There are no silly or insignificant questions – if you need information or clarification please ask.

Tryouts for the OBU cheerleaders are usually held the 2nd or 3rd weekend of April.  Shortly following tryouts, cheerleading duties begin.  All on campus students will begin practicing regularly in May.  While there are some activities in late spring and early summer, the majority of the season preparation occurs during the months of July and August.  A pre-camp work week will be held at the campus of OBU prior to attending a selected college cheerleading camp.  At the camp, the OBU cheerleaders and mascots get to not only learn new material, but also get their first opportunity of the year to compete with other colleges in the sport of cheerleading.

Full time cheerleader duties will begin one week prior to the beginning of classes.  During this work week cheerleaders will be preparing for the upcoming football season, pep rallies, and community events.

Cheerleaders are required to cheer at all OBU football games, home basketball games, pep rallies,  and selected appearances at other sporting events such as tennis, baseball, etc.  Additional appearances are made at OBU and community events and functions.  Practice is held three(3) times per week (usually in the evening) with additional training and conditioning as needed.

Cheerleaders and mascots who make the active squad receive a $1,000/year scholarship for the first year and $2,000/year for returning cheerleaders and mascots.

Ouachita Baptist University Cheerleader Goals:

  • We strive to support all OBU Athletic teams.
  • We serve as Ambassadors for OBU in the community and at various College activities.
  • We participate as an athlete in the sport of Competitive College Cheerleading.
