Ouachita Offensive Coordinator Jay Derby
Email Coach Derby
Jay Derby
is in his ninth year on the Ouachita staff after coming to OBU from
Delta State with Todd Knight.
Derby will be in his third season as the offensive coordinator and also will coach quarterbacks for the fourth year. Derby served as the
recruiting coordinator for Ouachita from 1999-2004. He coached
the defensive line from 1999-2001 and the wide receivers from 2002-2003.
Derby, a native of
Goldsboro, N.C., played football at Guilford College in North Carolina and won a conference championship as a senior. He started his coaching career at his alma mater in 1992. Derby
went on to Methodist College for a year and then to Delta State, where his responsibilities included tight ends,
receivers and special teams.
In his second season as offensive coordinator for the Tigers, his offense set numerous school records. Last season, the OBU offense set a school record for most yards in a game (573) against Arkansas Tech on homecoming, while also setting a school record for most passing yards in a single game (478). Also in 2006, his offense finished No. 1 in the Gulf South Conference in the red zone; No. 2 in turnovers lost, No. 3 in passing yardage per a game and No. 3 in sacks allowed.
In his first three
years at Ouachita, Derby coached and developed a defensive line that
anchored one of the top run-stopping defenses in the league and menaced opposing quarterbacks as well. Derby coached All-American end T.J. Bingham, who became Ouachita's all-time sack leader and an NFL contributor.
As the recruiting
coordinator, Derby organized the coaching staff to find the best
way to attract the best student-athletes to the Tiger program.
Derby is also the director for the Ouachita Tiger Football Camp, which has welcomed
over 500 junior high and senior high football players to the Ouachita
campus since 2003.
Derby and his wife
Susan have two daughters: Caroline, who turned six in July, and
Anna, 2.
