Garry Crowder is entering his 12th season as the head coach of the Ouachita Lady Tigers.
In his time at Ouachita, he has become one of the most successful college coaches in Arkansas. His 1999-2000 squad set a school record for wins, breaking the previous mark set in 1995 by his first OBU squad. The next year, the Lady Tigers won 20 games (2000-2001), the third time that a Lady Tiger team under Crowder has set a school record for wins in a season. The 1999-2000 team also became the first OBU women's team to be ranked nationally in the WBCA/USA NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll. In the 2001-2002 season, the Lady Tigers reached as high as No. 20 in the nation. Five of his six teams have qualified for post-season play.
Before coming to Ouachita, Crowder spent 16 years in Arkansas High School Basketball and was one of the winningest coaches in the state. His overall high school record is 404-109, winning an impressive 78.8 percent of his games.
Crowder began his coaching career at Taylor High School in 1979. During his three-year stay, his team posted an overall record of 65-36, with all three teams winning more than 20 games. In 1982, Crowder moved to Jessieville High School, where he spent 13 years as the Lady Lions head coach. Crowder’s teams won eleven Conference titles, nine District Championships, seven Regional Tournaments, made six Final Four State Tournament appearances, with two State Runner-ups. Crowder also served on the Arkansas High School Coaches Association Executive Committee and was the 1994 Chairman of the Arkansas Girls All-Star Committee.
Crowder, 50, is married to Joan (Duke) Crowder. Joan is a 1985 graduate of Ouachita with a BSE degree in Elementary Education. She has spent sixteen years teaching in public schools in Arkansas. They have one son, Preston, who is seven years old.
Crowder graduated from Henderson State University in 1978 and was a pitcher on the HSU baseball team. The Leola, Ark., native led the Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference in wins as a senior in 1978 and was named second-team All-AIC.
